Directions for Reading Responses
·        Read for 20 minutes every day.  Be sure to choose a mix of fiction and nonfiction books.  You can also read magazine or newspaper articles!

·        Choose a Reading Response Activity from the back of this page.  Make sure you know if your book is fiction or nonfiction!

·        You may use the same book for more than one Reading Response.  Since you are probably reading chapter books, it might take a while to finish one book.

·        Please write each Reading Response on a piece of loose leaf.

·        Each Reading Response should be 10 or more sentences.

·        Reading Responses should include 2 or more details from the book.

·        Anything you write about should include reasons WHY.  For example, don’t just tell what happens in your favorite part, also tell WHY it was your favorite part.

·        A great Reading Response involves making a connection between what you read and something in your life.  You can make a connection to something that happened to you, something you read about in another book, something you saw in a movie, or something that happened to someone you know.

Format for Reading Responses
The following should be at the top of the page (under your school heading) for each Reading Response.

Dear Future 3rd Graders...

Dear Future 3rd Graders,

I am so excited to meet you and begin our year together in September!  I hope you enjoy time with your family and friends, have some fun vacations, relax, and have a great summer.  3rd grade is a very important year and I know you will want to spend some time this summer preparing.  I encourage you to read every day and work on a few pages in your Summer Solutions Math Book each week.  By doing a little bit of work each week, you will ensure that you do not forget the skills you learned in 2nd grade, and you will begin 3rd grade ready to learn new things!

I hope you will read several books this summer!  Please complete 4 Reading Response choice activities from the attached sheet on separate pieces of loose leaf paper.  Please bring your Reading Responses and your completed Summer Solutions book to school on the first full day.

Please review the 3rd grade supply list on the back of this page so you can be prepared for school in September.  If you have any questions, your family can e-mail me at MCurro@SFAschool.org.

Enjoy the summer and be safe!  See you in September!

                                                                Warmly,
                                                                Ms. Curro
